EDUCATIONAL PLACES TRAVEL GUIDE

In accordance with the subject I decided to study: “Teaching science in Second Life”, I’ve visited
the following educational places:

ACS Island: http://slurl.com/secondlife/ACS/86/203/25 - SL home of the American Chemical Society (ACS), with exhibits and events - http://www.flickr.com/photos/adelina_sporea/3125009588/

Astronomy and Physics Exhibits by Roger Amdahl: http://slurl.com/secondlife/Primrose/204/55/86 - Exhibits explaining many aspects of astronomy and the associated physics - http://www.flickr.com/photos/adelina_sporea/3125041892/

Biomedicine Research Labs - Sbarro Health Research Organization - http://slurl.com/secondlife/Biomedicine%20Research%20Labs/78/131/22 - SL headquarters of Sbarro Health Research Organization - http://www.flickr.com/photos/adelina_sporea/3125055932/

Nanotechnology Island - http://slurl.com/secondlife/Nanotechnology/219/219/23 - The nanoscience & nanotechnology hub of Second Life, sponsored by the UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) - http://www.flickr.com/photos/adelina_sporea/3125072326/

Science Center - http://slurl.com/secondlife/Infotainment%20Island/13/87/22 - Home of the SL group named Science Center. Several demo science exhibits on display -http://www.flickr.com/photos/adelina_sporea/3124256825/

Due to some technical problems I had to stop to these places only...

Not all the places I have explored are really educational places. Only three of them I can recommend: ACS Island, Astronomy and Physics Exhibits and Nanotechnology Island. They present interesting exhibits with explanations which can be accessed as posters, note cards or images show. There are also animations of the chemical reactions.

Changing the appearance

My main concern is about too much time I need to accommodate with everything in the new world. I mean it is not enough only 8 hours activities as suggested at the beginning of module 1, section 2.

Anyway I found very interesting the change of appearance. I am still looking for some beautiful clothes and wigs. I feel very well in both shapes of my avatar because both of them have the same personality, I created just one character for now, not two; and of course, beautiful clothes make me feel more comfortable, as in RL. I think in education we still need to have an appropriate appearance.

I saw some other participants to the course very talented in finding a beautiful shape of their body and beautiful costumes too. I admired for example Evelyn Izquierdo photos on Flickr. She is very creative, her avatar is always wearing nice and modern clothes and she is a nice presence in any environment.

I think the appearance is very important and the behaviour too. I even met some people in the world who were embarrassed about their look and they apologised for that; and I was an unknown person! Some other time I travelled to the Orientation Island and I was teleported in the middle of very strange costumed characters. I did not feel very well…
I am confident I can do things better and I enjoy to experience. The only thing I need is time…

No matter how many hours we spent for the creation of our avatar we should be aware that it is only a character playng a role. I think that it could be dangerous to take SL too seriously. One can easily substitute his identity to those of his avatar. I understand SL can be a learning environment as it is considered a social space, but too many hours spent in world could isolate people; they communicate in SL but not in RL.

The story of my first steps in Second Life

My new image has a name: Nalida Quintessa. I feel excited, it is like to be born once again if you take it seriously. I did not meet any technical issues or difficulties (except in choosing clothes), but I think it took me too much time. When I arrived on the island there were several other avatars around and I did not feel very well trying to change my appearance in their presence.

It is easy to move and flying is wonderful too. I feel a world of promisses....
I even spoke to other avatars, AK Scribe for example and I have to appologize to Teresa Ewing because she offered her help and I did not answer, being ready to quit the island.

It is just the begining, I have to work more to develop my avatar skills in communication, movement and object manipulation.

But I had a moment of stupor... When another SL resident approached I was so amazed about his gesture... I entered the SL without being well prepared, without any knowledge about how avatars can move, communicate and express their feelings. I rapidly understood what it is about when I noticed the text written in the left corner of my monitor; now I find the gesture useful as you can easily understand that the other is talking to you.

SELF-DIAGNOSTIC EXERCISE
Yes, my friend, knowledge is the most valuable thing we have. All of us we are learning every day, from our family members, from our friends, from our teachers and even from the lady in the bookstore who talked to her sister about an incident in her life. Sometimes we are learning not even to notice it. But when your purpose in your life is to learn, more and more every day, this is wonderful. You become richer than yesterday, you enlarge your skills and you fully enjoy your life. I think learning could be also a way to survive: you can face a lot of difficult situations. Do not wait for the difficulties to come, be prepared in advance!
Just think how lucky we are to live on this planet now when we can use the internet and not fifty years ago, or even twenty. It helps us to do things much faster, to obtain the information we need or want at any moment. Let me tell you about a course I took on line, several years ago. I am a person with a lot of responsibilities, I have to do a lot of things, and time is always too short for me, as you very well know. That is why when I found the course “General Course on Intellectual Property”, organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2002 as an e-learning delivered course I felt it is an opportunity for me to learn something interesting in a new environment which I did not experienced till that moment and wasting not too much time. I was preparing my lessons during traveling by bus to my laboratory and in the evening I was not spending too much time in front of the computer. The collaboration with the tutor was excellent, always answering to my questions, guiding me all over the course. The distance disappeared and at the end I felt myself as a champion. Do you understand? I was a person in Romania taking a course in the USA without any travel between these two countries.

E-learning was for me an exciting experience in 2002. I was always bearing it in my mind, looking for the moment I could use it as a provider of knowledge. Since I was involved in several educational projects I felt that in the near future I need to use this technology. It can help me to be in many places in the same time by having a lot of trainees all over the country. Our educational projects address the needs of the teachers at the pre-university level as it concerns science teaching by experiment. I am confident that e-learning (term which can cover many technologies) will be very useful in my work).
Experiments mean data. You can teach the student how to do the experiment, how to understand it, but very important is also to teach him to understand the data he obtains, to understand the results of his work. Since 2 years ago data acquisition using computers was not used in school experiments. Recently, by means of the projects we coordinate and the partnerships we have we introduced these tools in the Romanian schools, during the training courses for teachers and demo sessions for students. The concern that this approach induced at science teachers and students gave us the courage to diversify our offer for schools and to involve more participants. Their interest made us to try to promote these methods to the middle and elementary school starting from our experience with high school students and teachers. The reaction of the end-users and their enthusiasm made possible the organization of contests for students and science fairs where students came with their experiments using data acquisition technologies (see our web site at http://education.inflpr.ro/ section Activities and Events).
Am I a pioneer? I do not know, but I always need to be informed, I always need to have up-to-date information and tools. I am innovative as my profession requires this (I am working in research) but I am a good observer for better understanding people around me and the events as well. I think ageing could be a threshold as I see old people giving up in understanding events and new technologies. I know this cannot happen to me.
I and Dan, my husband (we are a team, working in the same lab) we are the most innovative in our organization as we are the first to establish in Romania, at a research institute, a center to support science education in schools. Besides that, by diversity of its activities we can claim that the center is a European premiere. We love to challenge, to be the first and we are fighting (with the administration, with the mentality, with our country legacy in education) to promote our outreach activities.
